Don’t forget to vote today

ENID, Okla. — Today is Election Day for several local races.

This election isn’t getting as much publicity as previous state and national races, but the outcome will have a big impact at the local level.

We’re urging those registered to vote to cast their ballots.

In Enid’s municipal elections, Wards 3, 4 and 6 are open this year. Lewis Blackburn is the incumbent in Ward 3, Drew Ritchie is the Ward 4 commissioner and Todd Ging is commissioner in Ward 6.

Blackburn and Ritchie said they will not seek new terms, and Ging is term-limited.

The races for Enid City Commission are:

• In east-central Enid’s Ward 3, bankruptcy attorney Ben Ezzell is pitted against former city employee Eldon Stephens.

• In northeast Enid’s Ward 4, Rodney Timm, a farmer and rancher who works for Lippard Auctioneers, will face former city commissioner Loyd Kaufman.

• In northwest Enid’s hotly contested Ward 6, Joey Meibergen, executive vice president of W.B. Johnston Grain Co., is running against Integris Bass Baptist Health Center surgeon David Vanhooser and restaurateur Mickey De La Cruz, owner of Panevino Wine and Tapas Bar.

A runoff in Ward 6, if necessary, will be in May. New commissioners will take office that month.

Several area school board races also are on the ballot.

Please don’t forget to vote. Part of our responsibility for inheriting freedom is to be part of the process that governs us.

Put your vote where your mouth is. If you don’t participate, you don’t have a right to complain.
