Letter: Chisholm Trail marker steps need repairs

ENID, Okla. — I drive in from the north on U.S. 81 every morning. I have watched with much interest the bridge on U.S. 81 and 4th Street being replaced. I didn’t realize all the steps it takes to complete this process.

It has special interest to me, because my father was the night watchman for the project back in 1959 when it was first built. It brings back many good memories.

Another memory is the Chisholm Trail marker at the intersection of U.S. 81 and U.S. 45 (Carrier Road). I have taken Cub Scout groups there, my children picked up trash on July 5 as a 4-H project, and, just recently, I took a picture of Flat Stanley on the monument for a project for my granddaughter.

I found the steps going up to the monument in very bad condition. The cement is crumbling, making the steps unsafe to walk on.

I don’t know who is in charge of the upkeep of this monument, but something needs to be done to repair the steps. This landmark is very much apart of our history.

The stories of Jesse Chisholm driving cattle down the Chisholm Trail are just so much a part of our heritage.

I even use the Chisholm Trail Marker as a reference point when giving directions to my house.

I hope these steps can be repaired.
