Star mayor: A big thumbs up to Enid’s Bill Shewey for his selection by art education association

ENID, Okla. — Thumbs up to Enid Mayor Bill Shewey’s honor as Star Mayor by the Oklahoma Art Education Association.

Shewey was selected for the Star Mayor award for his support of several artistic efforts in Enid.

Shewey has promoted Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse’s initiative to help increase access to low-income children, appeared in a fundraising murder mystery for an Enid organization, supported Enid Symphony Orchestra and the arts accessibility program in Enid Public Schools.

Academic thumbs up to the commitment of Enid’s community and civic leaders to Northwestern Oklahoma State University through the Endowed Faculty Chair Program.

The “Legacies of Excellence” celebrates that commitment.

The following endowed chairs were recognized Sept. 11: The Brud Baker Endowed Chair in Business, The Janet Hart Cordell Endowed Chair in Nursing, The Dan L. Dillingham Endowed Chair in Business, The James Douglas Frantz Endowed Chair in Business, The Harold G. Hamm Endowed Chair in Business, The Senator Ed Long Endowed Chair in Education, The Bert H. Mackie Endowed Chair in Business, The John K. Martin Endowed Chair in Education, The Citizens of Enid Endowed Chair in Psychology and The Citizens of Enid Endowed Chair in Social Work.

More thumbs up for Paul and Joan Allen and Dan and Kay Dillingham, slated to be honorees at the Enid Public Schools Foundation’s Oct. 30 Hall of Fame Banquet.

The Allens gave $125,000 to the foundation’s 100 Percent SMART campaign, designed to provide SMART boards for all core classrooms district-wide.

The Dillinghams supported the $99 million bond issue and joined a handful of other local businesses and individuals in making a $3.4 million donation to the schools.

Thanks for investing in our children and in the future of this community. Your contributions will impact Enid for generations.

Our wide-open spaces, good wind and a welcoming community convinced the American Kitefliers Association to bring its annual national convention to Enid.

The AKA convention is an annual gathering of kite enthusiasts, artists and competitors. It ranks as one of the largest kite gatherings in the world.

To quote Brent Kisling, executive director of Enid Regional Development Alliance, this is a prime example of how tourism is working.

We can’t agree more. Thumbs up to the efforts of the ERDA and the Enid Convention & Visitors Bureau in bringing this national event to our fair city.
