Skating rink would be a great attraction for holidays

ENID, Okla. — Main Street Enid has a chance to make a good thing even better.

The annual Enid Lights Up the Plains event kicks off the Christmas season downtown and has proven to be a popular event, with the highlight being the fireworks display.

This year, if Kelly Tompkins, Main Street Enid project manager, has her way, there will be ice skating downtown, too.

Main Street has started a fundraising drive to rent a portable, synthetic ice skating rink for two weeks, Nov. 23 through Dec. 7.

It will cost $35,000 to bring the 30-by-60-foot rink here and set it up on the Garfield County Court House lawn. Tompkins is working with businesses to provide sponsorships to bring the rink here, and a large public event, Christmas Karaoke, 7-10 p.m. Oct. 18 at Cherokee Strip Conference Center Plaza, also has been scheduled as a fundraiser.

Having the rink here would be a good thing, another fun thing for families to do. On top of that, Main Street Enid wants to work with Enid organizations. Tompkins is recruiting organizations to help staff the rink, and would split the ticket proceeds, so everyone can make a little money.

Other cities have set up such rinks during the holiday season, and they have proven to be popular destinations. There’s no reason to assume it wouldn’t be a hit in Enid.
