Thumbs up to the people assisting Enid’s Horn of Plenty

ENID, Okla. — Thumbs up to the volunteers and donors who helped the recent Horn of Plenty food drive.

More than 500 volunteers turned out Oct. 7 to gather food and help replenish the food pantry’s shelves.

Horn of Plenty serves 17 local agencies: Abundant Life Ministries, Department of Human Services, Drummond Pantry, Garriott Road Church of Christ, Head Start, Hope Outreach, Inner City Ministries, Living Word Fellowship, North Garland Church of Christ, Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church, Salvation Army, Sandra Beasley Independent Living Center, Shepherd’s Cupboard-Bethany United Methodist Church, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, University Place Christian Church, YWCA and Zoe Bible Church.

Thumbs up and congratulations to six Enid and northwest Oklahoma women who were named to this year’s 50 Making a Difference, part of the Journal Record’s annual Woman of the Year gala.

Honored were: Deanna Atkinson, president of Oklahoma Environmental Services, Enid; Janet Cunningham, president of Northwestern Oklahoma State University; April Danahy, vice president of corporate communication and human resources for Security National Bank, Enid; Cheryl Evans, president of Northern Oklahoma College; Deena Fisher, dean of NWOSU’s Woodward campus; and Ora Morgan, chief financial officer for Autry Technology Center.

Fisher and Cunningham also were inducted into the Circle of Excellence, which recognizes sustained achievement of women who have been a Woman of the Year honoree three or more times.

Thumbs up to Willa Jo Fowler, who was voted president-elect of Oklahoma State School Boards Association.

Fowler, who is president of Enid Public Schools Board of Education, has been a member of the board and OSSBA since 1975.

She has been on the OSSBA board of directors since 1989, representing District 3, which includes, Garfield, Grant, Kay, Noble, Pawnee and Payne counties.

Thumbs down to what we would call, at best, a questionable decision in the Enid-Tulsa Union football game.

The Redskins recovered an onside kick in the first half when they were up 35-0 against the Plainsmen.

There was no need for Union to go for the onside kick leading by that much in a game. They eventually won 63-7. As we said, at best, the decision was questionable. At worst, it was unsportsmanlike.
