Pedestrians, drivers both have responsibility in traffic

ENID, Okla. — We want to urge drivers and pedestrians to be mindful of each other, for the safety of us all.

We had an unfortunate situation this week in which a pedestrian was hit and killed. We don’t want to see any repeats.

Pedestrians have a responsibility to be careful and cross at designated crosswalks. They also need to make sure the way is clear before stepping out into the street.

Drivers also have a responsibility. For one, obey the traffic laws, which include speed.

It’s a proven fact it takes longer to stop a vehicle if it’s going faster than the posted speed limit than it would if it’s going the speed limit.

Drivers also need to be aware of what’s going on around them. That means concentrate on driving.

It means being aware of your surroundings, where other vehicles are, where pedestrians are. It means not talking on the phone or texting while driving.

Particular places of interest where everyone needs to use extra caution are where the city’s trail system crosses streets. There are several places where the trail crosses streets now, and as the trail grows those crossings are going to multiply.

And, as the trail grows, its popularity will grow, too. That means more walkers, joggers and bikers will be out enjoying the outdoors.

We’d like to see the crossings be clearly marked, possibly with lights, too.

But, it ultimately will come down to personal responsibility on the part of drivers and pedestrians.

Be aware. Be safe.
