Enid Lights Up the Plains celebration gets thumbs up

ENID, Okla. — Yuletide thumbs up for the electrifying Enid Lights Up the Plains event.

The annual celebration featured entertainment, refreshments, lights, horse-drawn rides and fantastic fireworks.

A cross shining on Broadway Tower provided a perfect backdrop for the year’s fireworks.

Congrats to Kelly Tompkins, director of Main Street Enid, for the successful event.

As an added bonus, we hope fundraising in January or February can bring an ice skating rink to town for the 2013 Enid Lights Up the Plains.

Thumbs up to Operation Cookie Cutter, a military engagement with the objective to share a touch of home with military members deployed overseas during the holidays.

The annual mission was a success, with 27 volunteers packing nearly 1,400 cookies into 38 boxes that were mailed later Tuesday to troops deployed throughout the world.

The boxes go not only to deployed airmen, but also to those who are on remote tours in places like Korea, where they are unable to take their families with them.

Continuing a military theme, more thumbs up to a group of Enid women making this Christmas special for service personnel.

The Blue Star Mothers is a group of mothers of military personnel who send care packages and gifts to service members overseas.

They’ve been taking donations to send to Enid service members for Christmas.

The Blue Star Mothers have an office in Oakwood Mall, near Dillard’s.

The group holds a business meeting the second Thursday of each month.

Thank you for everything you do.

Last but not least, thumbs up to Enid Symphony Orchestra for its classy presentation of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

The cast was led by Paul Stuart, winner of the 2009 Irene Ryan Award, and also included Enid natives Louisa Dienst and Lindsey Newell, John Keckeisen, Michael Jones and Kimberly Weast.

Congrats for the great Holiday Pops performances!
