Letter: More space needed for absentee voting

ENID, Okla. — I had the privilege of in-person absentee voting Nov. 2 at Garfield County Election Board. I would like to commend the employees for being helpful and pleasant while trying to process the long line of some 75-100 voters who were there at that time.

However, the physical facility was horribly inadequate for that many people. We had to snake around outside and through two small offices and a store room. There was even insufficient space for disabled voters to sit while waiting to vote, although the staff was doing their best to find such.

Surely, Garfield County and the city of Enid could devote some of the present excess square footage in either the white elephant on Purdue or the existing downtown center to the election board for the short periods of such elections.

Our citizens deserve to be able to vote in some semblance of order. Our leaders — county and city — seem determined to continue building governmental space for blue-sky purposes over the dissent of the voters. Surely they could then cooperate to make space available for such an important event as an election.
