Good deeds: Students from Marquette University working in Enid doing spring break service

ENID, Okla. — The words “spring break” bring to mind college students having fun in the sun in some exotic or semi-exotic locale.

How about Enid, Okla.?

That’s probably not what many college students had in mind, but for a group of 18 Marquette University students, Enid is the place to be.

As the school has done for years, it again has sent students out across the country to do good deeds through its Marquette Action Plan.

This mission statement from the Marquette Action Program Facebook page pretty much sums up what the students are doing: “For over 30 years, Marquette University students have enjoyed making service trips during spring break. The Marquette Action Program (M.A.P.) offers the chance to work and interact with people all over the United States.”

Updates on the Facebook page show students at Brooklyn Collaborative School, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and in Detroit, Ivanhoe, Va., Kansas City, St. Louis and Montgomery, Ala.

Oh yeah, and Enid. One photo shows the students bunking down on cots at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.

For more than 20 years, students have been coming to Enid to help Habitat for Humanity build homes here.

The students come here to work. Here, they are working on a four-bedroom, two-bath home at 2001 E. Maple. On Tuesday, for example, they put siding on the house and built the attic and attic stairs.

Habitat for Humanity appreciates the help, and the students enjoy being able to provide some assistance.

Marquette students here this week are Tom Gill, Rachel Schueller, Patrick Barnhouse, James Seter, Gina Steinhilber, Jonathan Quarles, Nicole Grieve, Kelsey Kalemba, Carlos Pena, Victor Jacobo, Andrea Spagnoli, Lindsay Jackson, Cheyenne Westerman, Brittany Bernal, Noble Salwan, Matthew Munschaeuer, Benjamin Sleva and Brian Jacobs.
