New canola plant could be a fantastic opportunity for economy in Enid area

ENID, Okla. — Enid’s newest business fits right into our agricultural heritage.

Northstar Agri Industries and Enid Regional Development Alliance annou-nced Monday Northstar will build a canola processing plant here.

The plant would employ 55 people full time, with an annual payroll of $3.75 million.

There still are some details to work out, such as exactly where the plant will be located, but we know some things. We know it will be on the east side of the city in the Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Public Schools district. It is expected to be completed before the canola harvest in June 2015.

It will be able to process 2,200 tons of canola per day, or 760,000 tons per year. It will include a full refinery capable of annually producing 580 million pounds of food-grade refined canola oil and 450,000 tons of canola meal.

Canola has been growing in popularity in northwest Oklahoma in recent years as a rotational crop with hard red winter wheat.

We anticipate with this new plant, we’ll see canola become an even more popular crop. As Roger Don Gribble, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service northwest area agronomist, said: If farmers can make money with canola, they will plant more canola. It’s a matter of simple economics.

Having this facility here should make canola more attractive to local farmers. This announcement is a good thing for our community. It’s another example of how our city is moving forward.

We’re happy to welcome Northstar to the Enid community and can’t wait until the plant is operational.
