Letter: Voting is our privilege and duty

ENID, Okla. — The men who are running for election for our city council all say our citizens need to regain trust in the city council, and they will see that it happens.

That sounds really good to me. I wish we could vote them all in! I hope we will have a record turnout to vote, showing that we are citizens who are enough to vote and are not just complainers. We owe new and present council members that courtesy. What’s the old saying, “Put up or shut up”?

So now, our scenario may include our city government going into the hotel business. Is this not in competition with other lodging owners? Will our city eventually go into other types of business? Where does the competition end? Think about it.

Where will the funding for the city-owned hotel come from? I would think the city money bags are a bit depleted after the convention center construction and for the overruns on that project.

Do we get to vote for or against the hotel project before we can know the convention center is at least paying its own way? Or will we need to vote ourselves some bonds and taxes to get the convention center and the hotel some operating funds, perchance all those crowds don’t come as expected? Is anyone counting chickens before the eggs are hatched?

We still need some major water situations resolved — not only for homeowners, but for the commercial gray-water situations. Any new businesses will also need water. Shouldn’t water be at the top of the to-do list?

What is the big hurry on $50 million for parks and trails? Let’s take care of some necessities before we start putting out cosmetic fixes.
