While not rampant, Enid gang activity raises concerns

Enid News and Eagle

— Are there gangs in Enid?

That question has been asked many times through the years. The answer is yes.

The problem isn’t as large as what is seen in many urban areas, but to deny there is any gang activity in Enid is short-sighted and ignoring the facts.

And, getting caught up in arguments over what constitutes a gang and whether kids who say they are in a gang or are just “wannabes” tends to muddy the waters. If a group of people hang out together and either cause problems or commit crimes, then there is an issue.

The fact is, there is criminal activity in the community, and gang members are involved in some of those illegal activities. Where there is money to be made, often through the sale of drugs, there are going to be gangs involved. That much cannot be disputed.

Police have identified various gangs that have a presence in Enid, including Crips, Bloods and MS-13.

What we all can do — and should be doing — is be observant.Pay attention to what’s going on around your neighborhood. If you see anything that seems out of the ordinary, report it to the authorities.
