ENID, Okla. —
Funeral service for Virginia Mae Reitz will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at First Christian Church, Cherokee, Okla. Arrangements are under the direction of Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. The casket will be open at the church before the service and remain closed after.
Virginia Mae Reitz was born Dec. 9, 1929, on the family farm, southeast of Alva, to Roy and Marguerite Bonner. She passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid after a brief illness.
She was raised on the family farm near Dacoma, Okla. A graduate of Dacoma High School, she attended Northwest State College in Alva for two years.
She worked at the Agricultural Soil Conservation Service and the Abstract office in Cherokee for many years.
Virginia married Jack Reitz Jan. 1, 1952, in Dacoma, Okla. They were parents to three children, Craig, Renee and Rolfe.
Virginia was a woman of many talents. Her mother taught her to be an accomplished seamstress, and she spent many hours sewing clothing for family and friends. Her father taught her about farming and gardening, and she enjoyed tending her garden and trips to the farm to monitor the wheat throughout her life. She loved babies, cooking, dogs, and the neighborhood cat, for which she made a shelter and provided breakfast on a regular basis.
At the age of 75, she learned to use a computer and became very adept at sending emails and exchanging recipes with friends.
She treasured her church life. A member of the Christian Church in Cherokee since 1951, she kept her acceptance letter in a fireproof vault for more that 60 years. She was very active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship group, assisting with innumerable funeral dinners and with other functions at the church.
Her greatest love and pride was her family. She dedicated herself to children and grandchildren, saving every graduation announcement, thank you note, and email sent to her. In later years, she spent countless hours attending to the comfort and health needs of Jack, becoming a daily fixture at the nursing home in Cherokee.
Her parents, Roy and Marguerite Bonner; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Neal Fugit; her brother-in-law, Bob Reitz; and her grandson, Jeremy, preceded Virginia in death.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; daughter, Renee Hillman and husband Steve of Phoenix, Ariz.; sons, Craig and wife Ruthanne of Edmond, and Rolfe and wife Anita of Enid; grandchildren, Stephanie Hodges and husband Phillip of Houston, Texas, Brian Reitz of Glendale, Ariz., Melissa Reitz and fiancé Tracy Sisk of Gainesville, Fla., Adam Reitz and wife Sara of Edmond, and Lauren Reitz of Edmond; stepgrandchildren, Dimitra Becker and husband Chad; Justin Hillman and wife Amanda; and Chad Hillman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Christian Women’s fellowship through Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee, Okla.
