Joan Marie Crews-Thorp

ENID, Okla. — Joan Marie Crews-Thorp, 84, has gone to be with her Lord and Savior.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kenneth Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Garber Cemetery under the direction of Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Visitation for family and friends will be 5:30-7 today at the funeral home.

Joan was born to Robert E. and Marie Crews on Feb. 21, 1928, and died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.   

She married Jack M. Stovall on June 29, 1946, in Winfield, Kan. Born to this union were Jacque, Cathy, Lana and Steve Stovall. She later married Col. (Ret.) Lee L. Thorp, her true love, in Garber, Okla., on June 5, 1994.

In the summer of 1945, she was employed at the Naval Research Laboratory on the beautiful Potomac River. Later, Joan was a homemaker, lifeguard and seamstress. She was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital as CNA, ER, Recovery Room, medical records, pathology secretary, surgery, and at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Oklahoma City, and EM Hospital. Joan was also employed by Dr. J. Jarman and Dr. B. Anthony in Enid.  

She was a devoted wife and mother and loved her family deeply. Also, she cared very, very much for her friends and co-workers. She especially loved, and was happiest, when she was singing gospel music, and she also had a backup tape ministry for many years.

Joan was an avid basketball player, swimmer and diver and enjoyed other sports. She also did some acrylics and loved cooking.

She is survived by her children, Jacque Stovall Bailey and Tim of Denver. Colo., Cathryn Stovall of Enid, Lana Tarnoff of Littleton, Colo., and Steve Stovall and wife Bridget of Douglas;  grandchildren, Bree Gregory, Matt Simpson,  Shelby Simpson, Joel and Sarah Weatherford,  LaRee Bauer, Crystal and Bryan George, Stephne and Larry Smith; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Chloe and Kyler George, Greg and Grant Smith, Donovan Bowman, Mya and Riley Weatherford, Leah and Erin Windgate; and dear friend and caregiver, Fae Owens.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Col. (Ret.) Lee L. Thorp; sister, Ione Crews-Schweer; and brothers, Robert E. Crews and James A. Crews.
