ENID — Funeral service for Afton Carrol Nichols will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Marshall Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Pingelton officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Bethel Cemetery near Shawnee, Okla., under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

Afton Carrol Nichols, daughter of the late Martin Luther and Ruby Elma (Wells) Rose, was born March 23, 1944, in Alva, Okla., and passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, in Alva, Okla., at the age of 67 years, 8 months, and 22 days.

Afton attended Washington Grade School in Alva and graduated from Alva High School. She was quite an athlete in school, holding the record in the Little Olympics 50-yard dash for many years. She then attended beauty school in Oklahoma City.

She owned and operated a beauty shop in Newkirk for several years.

After marrying Ernie Nichols in 1997, they moved to Vinita, where she worked at the State Drug Rehab Center until health issues forced her to retire, and they moved to Shawnee. After the death of her husband, she moved to Alva to be near her sisters and brother.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and First Christian Church in Alva. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and playing the guitar.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie in 2004; one sister, Marna Lou Finney; and one brother, Monty Blaine Wimmer.

Afton is survived by her sister, Elma Ruth McMurphy and husband Bill of Alva; one stepson, Rocky Nichols and wife Alice of Arizona; one stepdaughter, Rhonda Walker of Durant; two stepgrandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Beadles Nursing Home Activity Fund or Alva First Christian Church.
