Lawrence Earl Highfill

ENID — Funeral service for Lawrence Earl Highfill, 87, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Cherokee First Christian Church, with the Rev. Tom Stanley officiating. Military honors by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Team will be given at the church. Burial will follow in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery under the direction of the Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee. Viewing will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6-7:30 p.m. The casket will be open at the church before service and remain closed after service.

Lawrence was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Lambert to Charles Ellsworth and Lily Pfeifer Highfill and passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Cherokee Manor.

He grew up in the Lambert community and graduated from Lambert High School in 1944.

He was inducted in the U.S. Navy on June 19, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Jan. 12, 1945, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1945.

He returned to Cherokee, where he worked at John Hay Conoco Station, and later for Alfalfa County District 2, retiring in 1988.

He and Lucille Hay were married on Nov. 19, 1952, in Cherokee. She preceded him in death on June 27, 1988.

He was a member of the Christian Church and Midway Sunday School class. He served as Chairman of the Deacons for two years before becoming an elder. Lawrence was an unofficial greeter, who was at the church door most Sundays.

He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and the American Legion.

Surviving are his brother, Richard Highfill and wife Rachel of Enid, and several nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wyatt and Robert Highfill; one sister, Clara Hill; two nephews, Armon Herbert Hill III and Richard Earl Highfill; and special friend, Juanita Wessels.

Memorials may be given in his memory to either the Christian Church Youth Group or Cherokee Senior Citizens Center through Goodwin Funeral Home.
