There is only one unbeaten team remaining at the NJCAA Division II World Series, and it’s the Parkland (Ill.) College Cobras.
Left-hander Steve Kuligowski scattered five hits in a complete-game effort and was backed by an explosive offense as the Cobras whipped Scottsdale (Ariz.) 10-1 in seven innings Wednesday night at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
The victory sends Parkland into tonight’s winner’s bracket game against Kankakee, a team the Cobras defeated 9-1 in the first round on Saturday.
“I’ve never played in anything this big,’’ said Kuligowski. “It can’t get better than this. This is so much fun.’’
Kuligowski said he didn’t have his best stuff — he walked five batters. But he was good enough to shut down Scottsdale for six straight innings after giving up a home run to R.J. Etchebarren to lead off the game.
He was helped by several nice plays at third base by Collin DeDecker.
“He’s done wonders for us like that all season,’’ said Kuligowski, who improved to 9-0 this season.
Kuligowski said he typically bounces back quickly after pitching, and wouldn’t rule out getting a relief assignment in the next several days.
“I have always had a rubber arm,’’ he said. “If they need me, I’m ready.’’
The Cobras erupted for four runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.
DeDecker and Kevin Kiermaier each had run-scoring singles and Jordan Mitchelhill had a sacrifice fly to key the rally.
Mitchelhill added a two-run single in the third inning as the Cobras went up 7-1.
Kiermaier belted a solo homer with two outs in the fifth inning and Nate Roberts added a two-run shot in the inning.
LSU-Eunice 10, Wallace 9
In a battle between the top two ranked teams in the country, LSU-Eunice withstood a Wallace comeback bid to stay alive in the tournament.
The top-ranked Bengals, who improved to 51-11, got a big game from nine-hole hitter Brook Boudreaux, who had two doubles, a home run and five RBI to highlight an 11-hit attack.
Zach Kirksey also homered for the Bengals, who advance to another elimination game today.
Wallace did not go quietly, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a one-run game.
T..J. Parks went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Shane Turner added a home run and Chris Fulford had two doubles.
Right-hander Chance Mistric picked up the win to improve to 15-1 on the season. He allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings.
