Matthews is a recipient of respiratory care honor

Kim Matthews, a student in Autry Technology Center’s respiratory care program, has been named the R.E. Hooper scholarship recipient for Oklahoma from Oklahoma Society for Respiratory Care, the state affiliate of American Association for Respiratory Care.

The organization provides professional support and continuing education for respiratory therapists. The R.E. Hooper award is OSRC’s highest honor for undergraduate students in respiratory care. Award criteria include academic achievement, career goals, personality strengths and financial need.

“What great news for Kim and an honor for our program that she was selected as the scholarship recipient for Oklahoma,” said instructor Deryl Gulliford. “As a single mother on a tight budget, this scholarship is a tremendous financial help for her family. She is an excellent student and this will give her a financial boost as she finishes the program and moves on to what I know will be a successful career taking care of people.”

With two asthmatic children and a father who died from complications associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Matthews said she knows the importance the respiratory therapist plays in medicine.

“Thanks in large part to Autry and the OSRC, I’m making my dream of becoming a respiratory therapist a reality,” she said.
