Victorian-era Christmas event set for Friday

ENID, Okla. — Humphrey Heritage Village will show Enid residents what Christmas was like in the 19th century during a special Christmas in the Village 5-8 p.m. Friday.

Buildings in Humphrey Heritage Village will be decorated as they would have appeared during the Victorian era. More than 2,500 feet of garland has been strung, said Andi Holland, executive director of Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.

“We’re doing it in the evening so the lights are on all the buildings, and there is an 18-foot Christmas tree,” Holland said.

Enid Park Board donated the Christmas tree to the museum for the event.

Character-led tours will take visitors through the buildings, which will feature period-style Christmas decorations. The tour will include activities for families.

“They will get to make crafts with the schoolmarm in the Turkey Creek School, and choirs will be singing in the church all evening,” Holland said. “It will be a lot of fun for the whole family. It’s a family event, and we encourage families to bring their cameras.

“There will be nice opportunities to get a family picture, and it’s a wonderful, simple — but traditional — way to kick off the season.”

This year is the first time a mercantile is featured, showing gifts that would have been displayed during the period. The mercantile is in a room in the back of the land office.

There is a $5 admission fee for adults and $3 for children, although members of Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center and the military will get in free.
