ENID —
The former Safeway building on West Broadway, which once housed a popular Mexican restaurant, recently was sold to a Woodward corporation, which plans to open at least two businesses there.
The building in the 800 block of West Broadway has mostly been vacant since about 2003, when Gambro Health Care Center left, said new owner Randy Myers. Myers is owner of Myers Electric in Woodward, and his wife, Mary, owns Dance Connection there.
They purchased the building July 1. Myers will open a Mr. Sparky Electrical and One Hour Heating and Air, both are franchise businesses he owns. He is not sure what will be done with the 4,000 square-foot area where La Macarena Restaurant was located, but did not rule out another restaurant.
Mary Myers also plans a performing arts school in the building.
“Our main focus now is to get the school open and the electrical heat and air shop open. We have lots of ideas about what can go in there. There is a lot of potential,” Myers said.
The building is 19,000 square feet.
Myers said he did not know until after he purchased the building the city of Enid is planning a revitalization of the downtown area. His building is only a few blocks from downtown, which he said creates more possibilities.
Myers said he and his wife have been looking at Enid for two years trying to find a property and to see if the market is ready for them.
“Enid is a good town. We had a lot of people helping us getting the building bought and helping us to know how to be active in the community,” he said.
Myers has been in business for himself nearly 13 years, and Mary has owned her dance school, Dance Connections, for 30 years. Myers said he thinks Enid is large enough he and his wife will fit in and still have a viable business in the community.
He plans to hire up to five people in the electrical business, but said Mary could hire as many as 10-20, depending on how the business grows.
Mary Myers said her school will be arts based, offering dance and music lessons, art classes and acrobatic tumbling. She also is considering gymnastics classes, but will decide later.
“We will start out with dance and music and model it after our school in Woodward,” she said. “We offer all types of music lessons. It’s a place parents can have more than one child in class at the same time, one studying dance or art and the other music.”
Myers said she performs extensive background checks and does drug screening on all teachers, so parents can feel comfortable about their child taking private lessons.
Myers said he currently is working on spraying weeds and upgrading the parking area.
He also will add a new roof to the building and has hired a local carpenter to do interior work.
