Salvation Army to solicit holiday donations online

Enid Salvation Army has a virtual Red Kettle where people can make donations without going out into the cold.

Online Red Kettles use the power of the Internet to complement the traditional bell-ringing Christmas campaign used in front of retail stores since 1891.

Facebook users can easily host and post an Online Red Kettle to their personal profile and automatically encourage the friends in their network to give. Each time a friend in the host’s network visits the kettle and makes a donation, an automatic notification is posted to friends in the donor’s network as well, indicating the donor’s support of the host and his or her Online Red Kettle. This ripple effect continues as more and more Facebook users give to or host their own Online Red Kettle.

“We see this as a valuable and growing means for fundraising,” said Salvation Army Maj. John Dancer. “As more and more people get online through blogs, social networking websites and other avenues, the use of these types of technologies will only increase.”

Money raised in the Online Red Kettles is used to support the organization’s overall Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, which helps local communities provide food, toys and clothing to more than 6 million people during the Christmas season and 35 million Americans in need year-round. The campaign helps provide toys, food, clothing, money for heating bills and rent and a variety of other social services.
