SAS Memorial Softball Tournament held in cold chill at Kellet Park

ENID, Okla. — Despite a cold shift in temperature Saturday morning, 16 teams took to the field at Kellet Ballpark for the Sherry Ann Suttmiller “SAS” Memorial Softball Tournament.

In 2010, the “Fight with SAS” tournament was organized to benefit Sherry Suttmiller and her family in her battle with pancreatic cancer.

Before Sherry passed away May 23, she told her husband, EPD Officer Jeff Suttmiller, she wanted the tournament to continue and for the FOP to continue to help people fight cancer.

The tournament is sponsored by the Suttmiller Family, Enid Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 144 and Enid Police Department.

This year’s tournament benefited Enid native Steve Schram, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer this May.

“There’s lots of people, it’s great,” Schram said. “We’re just watching.”

As well as the tournament, there were raffles for items including a rifle, three-day trip to Las Vegas and a stay at the Mandalay Bay Las Vegas.

FOP Vice President Sgt. Justin Hodges said the tournament had a good turnout, especially for the weather.

“It’s been good, real good,” he said. “Everybody is having fun. The weather held out for us and it didn’t rain, so we’re good.”

The tournament even drew former Dallas Cowboy and OU standout Roy Williams.

“I’m all about helping out good causes, and this a good cause,” Williams said, pausing to sign some hats and football cards for fans. “It’s a little cold out but its something fun to do.”

Williams said he was contacted via Twitter by Sgt. Kevin Bezdicek, and invited to attend the tournament. “It was a good time,” he said.

Jeff Suttmiller said he was pleased to see so many people come out to help and participate at the tournament. He said the tournament has grown each year.

“I think we’ve had a really good turnout,” Suttmiller said. “I would like to see it get bigger. It’s for a great cause.”

He said he was impressed at how nice a guy Williams was for coming to the tournament .

“I think it’s great he took time to come out here,” Suttmiller said.
