Barresi’s meeting in Enid is postponed

ENID, Okla. — A Monday public meeting previously announced by the state Department of Education has been postponed to sometime in January.

Janet Barresi, state superintendent of public education, announced the “Raise the Grade Together” project in an effort to help every school in the state improve and succeed.

The date for her trip to Enid, announced last month when report cards for every school in the state were released, was to have been Monday.

“We are not actually visiting Enid on Monday,” said Tricia Pemberton, spokeswoman for Oklahoma Department of Education. “It looks like something else took that slot in the morning, and we wanted to be able to devote more time to Enid. We are rescheduling that  visit to January.”

Pemberton said additional details would be announced closer to Barresi’s visit.

“Since we had not yet been contacted by the state department about the event, the change is not an inconvenience for us,” said Shawn Hime, superintendent of Enid Public Schools.

“We look forward to their visit in January. Our students and teachers will be excited to showcase what they are achieving in the classroom.”

The agenda for the education department’s “Raise the Grade Together” initiative is to bring together parents, civic, business and school leaders to hold constructive conversations about academic success and taking a community approach to education.

Where weak areas in student achievement or attendance are exposed, parents and community members are asked to help schools by offering mentoring assistance or volunteering.

Across the state, 1 percent of schools received an F on the report cards, 8 percent D, 34 percent C, 48 percent B and 9 percent A.
