That's showmanship: Mulhall youngster shows ewes at NW Dist. Jr. Livestock Show

ENID, Okla. — Shelby Frost brought four of her six ewes from Mulhall to the 79th annual Northwest District Junior Livestock Show, and took home champion Suffolk and reserve champion Dorset honors for her work.

The fifth-grader also won an unexpected honor.

“I didn’t know how the showmanship went,” Shelby said. “They announced it and I won it.”

There were 81 ewes and 250 wethers entered in the Wednesday sheep show.

Coming to the show was a holiday from school that her younger sister, Madison, and her mother, Stacy Frost, didn’t get to enjoy. Stacy Frost is herself a student and had to be in class Wednesday, so Shelby’s grandmother, Arleen Mack, brought Shelby and the ewes to Enid for the show.

This is Shelby’s second year exhibiting animals. She showed goats at the county fair and won second place — and made the premium sale.

Shelby uses a special bracket that fastens onto her wheelchair to make it easier to keep the ewes where they need to be in relation to her, while they are in the show ring.

The sheep judge, Kade Wilson, of Loveland, Texas, was encouraging to Shelby, Mack said.

“The first time she went out in the ring, the judge said, ‘You did a good job, keep on showing, keep on trying,’” Mack said.

The week-long show will feature more than 2,000 sheep, goats, cattle and swine brought by 881 4-H and FFA members attending 55 schools.

The goat show will be today, the cattle show will be Friday, and swine will be Saturday and Sunday. The premium sale will be held Monday evening.
