School report cards delayed

ENID, Okla. — The expected release of grade cards for every public school in Oklahoma was delayed today when the State Board of Education tabled the issue until later this month.

According to a press release from the State Department of Education, the board will take up the matter of releasing A-F Report Cards at its Oct. 25  meeting.

“We are pleased with the state board’s decision to review the A-F system to ensure it adequately reflects the success of Oklahoma schools, as well as provides reliable information that can be used to improve student achievement,” said Amber Fitzgerald, human resources and communications director for Enid Public Schools.

The report cards show four performance categories with a letter grade for each category, plus a composite letter grade assigned to the school.

One-third of the composite grade is for student achievement in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and writing.

One-third of the composite grade is for whole school performance, including the attendance rate, dropout rate, percent of students taking advanced course work, and bonus categories of school climate and parent and community engagement.

Seventeen percent of the composite grade is for overall student progress made, called student growth.

The remaining 17 percent is for progress made by the bottom 25 percent of students.
