ENID, Okla. — More than $2.5 million in building permit requests were recorded by the city of Enid in September, with nearly half coming from single-family home permits.

City Manager Eric Benson said the numbers reflect that business is good in Enid.

“It goes along with the increase in sales tax, one lags behind the other, but they do reflect trends,” Benson said. “Taking it on a monthly basis, it’s difficult to determine a trend, it needs a longer period to determine how they interact. It’s clearly the fact that business is up in Enid. Business is growing and the issues support it.”

The increase in building permits is another indication the local economy is strong, said Jon Blankenship, president of Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce.

“The data is all favorable, building permits, sales tax receipts, job count and low unemployment. It all bodes favorably for Enid right now,” Blankenship said.

Five single-family home permits were requested in September totaling $962,000. Requests were received from McClure Construction for 2410 Arlington, $148,000; Hoyer LLC for 321 E. Olive, $80,000; Edwards Custom Homes for 2205 Daybreak Lane, $290,000; and Jerry Shipley for single 1925 Mt. Vernon and 5007 Ridgedale, $280,000 and $164,000, respectively.

Commercial additions and remodeling accounted for another $700,000 in permit requests in September. Hembree and Hodgson Construction requested a permit for an addition/remodel at 1400 W. Chestnut, for $118,250, and at 2500 N. Van Buren for $95,000. Skyrider Builders requested a permit for 1716 S. Van Buren for $462,000. Ward Construction requested a $17,000 permit for 2313 W. Garriott, and Henson Construction a $9,300 permit for 200 E. Maple.

Nine residential remodel requests totaled $131,500 in September. Remodeling requests were made by Klemme Construction, 1402 Sonata, $15,000; Travis Ballard, 223 E. Columbia, $5,000; Louis Humphrey, 6314 N. Van Buren, $30,000; Klemme Construction, 2820 W. Randolph, $44,000; Randy Tinsley, 122 E. York, $1,000; Shane Welby, 1019 N. Washington, $7,500; Daniel Silk, 2808 Sunnybrook Lane, $25,000; Todd Wheeler, 118 Nottingham, $2,000; and Robert Faught, 2002 W. Maple, $2,000.

An educational request was made by Hembree and Hodgson Construction for 1305 S. Adams, totaling $335,000.

The remainder of the requests in September were for fences, garages and carports, signs, storage buildings, storm shelters and a swimming pool.

Last month’s report — which showed August business — totaled just more than $2.3 million. Commercial and residential remodeling topped all categories in August with $700,000. Commercial remodeling totaled $630,000 in August. Permits for new commercial buildings totaled $625,000.

July permits requested totaled more than $6 million, and June totaled about $2 million.
