Former deputy going to prison

A former Garfield County Sheriff’s Office deputy was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison on five counts of robbery.

Lanzy Lamar Coker was found guilty by a jury Feb. 24 on five of six counts related to a string of robberies at area convenience stores in late-December 2008 until mid-February 2009.

Coker, 51, was convicted on three counts of robbery with a firearm and two counts of attempted robbery with a firearm. The jury deliberated for more than three hours before returning its verdict and recommending a 20-year sentence, with sentences of five years for each of the three counts of robbery with a firearm and two and one-half years for both counts of attempted robbery with a firearm.

District Judge Ronald Franklin followed the jury’s recommendation for sentencing and ordered the sentences on the five counts to run consecutively.

During his testimony at the trial, Coker denied committing any of the robberies he confessed to the day of his arrest. He also denied owning any of the clothing described in the six robberies and said his needs were being met by a friend and area churches.

Coker said he confessed to the crimes following his arrest because a law enforcement officer held a gun to his head. However, Coker did not identify the officer he alleged threatened him.

Coker’s attorney, Jarrod Stevenson, filed an appeal Thursday.
