ENID —
An Enid couple is offering a glimmer of hope to cancer stricken patients in northwest Oklahoma.
The Walter and Dorothy Scott Memorial Cancer Foundation was formed by Stephanie DeClerck-Oaks and her husband Michael Oaks. The foundation will assist in providing cancer screening tests to those who cannot afford them. The foundation will initially screen for breast cancer. Declerck-Oaks said as funding increases the foundation will be able to screen for different types of cancer.
“We want to be able to educate the community when it comes to cancer as well as offer funds for individuals to get the screening they need,” Declerck-Oaks said.
Declerck-Oaks is very familiar with cancer. She lost both her mother and father, the namesakes of the foundation, to cancer and has herself battled breast cancer.
Inspired from overcoming cancer, Declerck-Oaks returned to Autry Technology Center to study radiographic technologies. She now works as a mammographer in the Enid area.
Working as a mammographer Declerck-Oaks seeks to raise awareness of early detection.
“I see several potential patients a week who need a scan but are unable to get one due to lack of funds or insurance,” Declerck-Oaks said.
Declerck-Oaks said that educating residents of northwest Oklahoma about cancer and early detection will be a great benefit to the area.
Declerck-Oaks will be cancer free ten years on July 10, 2011.
On June 25, the foundation is hosting a benefit golf tournament at Meadowlake Municipal Golf Course. The tournament will be a scramble format with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Pre-registration forms for the event are available at Meadowlake Municipal Golf Course, Golf USA, or can be found at the foundations website available at www.okscottfoundation.org. Participants can also register the day of the event. Registration begins at Meadowlake Municipal Golf Course at 7 a.m.
Teams will be comprised of four golfers. Price per golfer is $60 or $240 per team.
A raffle for door prizes will be held at the event as well as a free barbecue lunch for all participants in the tournament. The lunch is open to the public for a $10 fee. All proceeds will help increase the foundation’s budget.
According to Declerck-Oaks, the foundation is seeking sponsors for the benefit golf tournament.
For more information on the foundation and the golf tournament visit www.okscottfoundation.org or reach the foundation at 242-3235.
