Drummond kindergarten students bring toys for families, kids in need

A Drummond Elementary School kindergarten teacher wanted to teach her class they were “never too small to do a big thing” this Christmas season.

She didn’t know her small students’ desire to give would infect the entire elementary school.

Lynette Carel asked her 5- and 6-year-old students to bring in new or previously loved toys for families and children in need. Word of the project quickly spread through the school and other classes wanted to join in the giving. Besides collecting toys, students also donated clothing and bedding.

“As a mother I know my daughters may not look back years from now and remember the toys they received on Christmas morning, but I do know they will never forget the Christmas they gave their toys away to other boys and girls,” Carel said.

Once the gifts had been collected, University Place Christian Church pastor Jerry Galbreath came to speak to the children about where their gifts would be going.

The gifts were given to 80 to 100 families who eat at University Place Christian Church Monday soup kitchen. Galbreath said he has continued to receive daily calls throughout the holiday season from families in need.

One kindergartner, Rylie Eisenhauer, seemed to have learned Carel’s intended lesson well as she told Galbreath, “Christmas isn’t just about getting presents. It is about giving presents, too.”
