NTSB releases preliminary report on fatal plane crash near Alva earlier this month

National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the fatal airplane crash near Alva earlier this month.

Darin Moser, 44, of Alva, was killed shortly before midnight Dec. 12 when the airplane he was piloting hit the ground about three-quarters of a mile south of the Alva airport runway during foggy weather.

According to the NTSB report, Moser had filed a flight plan with the flight originating from Oklahoma City.

According to the report, the wreckage was examined at the crash site Dec. 13-14. The plane was found mainly intact, upright in an open field on its belly with the landing gear up. There was an initial impact crater containing some wreckage.

On both sides of the initial impact point there were several slash marks in the ground, consistent with propeller cuts. A second impact point was found with a wreckage path leading to the airplane. A damaged handheld GPS unit was removed from the wreckage for further examination.

According to the report, there were no reported emergency or distress calls from Moser. First responders had difficulty locating the accident site because of poor visibility due to fog.

Moser was certified to fly single and multi-engine airplanes and was instrument rated. He also was a flight instructor.

Moser was the owner of a towing and dozer service, an auto and diesel mechanic service, a Grasshopper mower dealership and a flight instruction business, all in Alva. He was an EMT and volunteer firefighter in Alva.
