NEW: Winter storm watch for area could mean travel woes
By Cass Rains
Staff Writer
Portions of northwest and central Oklahoma remain under a winter storm watch as some drivers begin their holiday travel.
The National Weather Service issued the watch, which means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that could impact travel.
The watch was issued about 4 a.m. this morning and lasts until late evening, according to the service.
Counties in the watch include: Garfield, Grant, Kay, Noble, Kingfisher, Logan, Payne, Canadian, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Grady, McClain, Cleveland and Pottawatomie counties.
The storm includes possibility of 2 to 5 inches of snowfall during the day and could produce blustering winds resulting in blowing snow and low wind-chill temperatures.
For those attempting to drive in the winter weather, Enid Police Department Lt. Warren Wilson advised travelers to allow extra time to reach their destination, allow extra space between vehicles and reduce speed.
Wilson also advised drivers to clear the windows of vehicles of all ice and snow before traveling.
Those traveling longer distances during the storm should carry supplies, such as extra food and water, blankets, an ice scraper and a cell phone, in case of an emergency.
