Teen in serious condition after jumping from moving vehicle during argument

A 17-year-old Goltry girl was arguing with her father before jumping out of a moving vehicle Sunday morning on Oklahoma 132.

Megan R. Kurtz jumped out of a Pontiac minivan at 8:55 a.m. Sunday while it was traveling at 50 mph, said OHP Trooper Joshua Byrd.

Kurtz’s father, Grant Kurtz, 44, was driving the vehicle on Oklahoma 132 about 1.3 miles north of U.S. 412. at the time of the incident.

“It was a ‘parenting discussion,’” Byrd said. “She did something wrong, he was confronting her about it, that was the gist of it.”

Byrd said following investigation of the matter there was no physical altercation between the two, nor are there any criminal charges pending.

“From what I can see now there is no foul play,” he said. “The story Mr. Grant told us matches the evidence at the scene.”

After Megan jumped from the vehicle, which Byrd said had slowed down considerably, she landed on her feet, but then hit her head on the pavement.

Byrd called her injury a “major trauma” to her head.

Still, he said, the accident could have been much worse than it was.

“She’s better off than what (the doctors) had expected,” he said. “They went ahead and transported her to OU Medical Center (in Oklahoma City) for treatment down there.”

Byrd said the 17-year-old was in serious condition as of 2 p.m. Sunday.
