Fryer fire proves costly on Thanksgiving Day

One Enid household is without a 1994 Mustang following a Thanksgiving Day fire caused by an outdoor turkey fryer.

The fire, reported at 1:04 p.m. Thursday at 1520 W. Cherokee, destroyed a detached garage, which housed a 1994 Mustang, according to an Enid Fire Department report.

Six EPD units responded to the fire.

Deputy Chief Michael Lawver said hot oil from the cooker dripped onto the ground and spread 10 feet to the garage, which became engulfed in flames.

The vehicle inside sustained heavy damage.

Estimated damage from the blaze was listed on the report at $15,000, more than the estimated value of the property set at $10,000.

Lawver said the cooker had been left on and was unattended.

“You shouldn’t leave them unattended if they’re on,” he said.
