U.S. Cellular primary Enid Lights Up the Plains sponsor this year

By Robert Barron, Staff Writer

For the seventh year in a row, U.S. Cellular is primary sponsor of Enid Lights Up the Plains, which opens the Christmas season Friday with a fireworks display and special events.

Stephen Jones, field marketing manager, presented a check for $6,000 to Main Street Enid Executive Direc-tor Lindy Chambers during a brief ceremony Tuesday morning. Jones presented Chambers with a keepsake statue of a flame, representing the lighting of the plains.

“We believe in supporting the communities we serve,” Jones said. “We like that this brings people together, and that’s what we do — connect people.”

U.S. Cellular has been in Enid approximately seven years and currently has eight employees here.

City Commissioner Drew Ritchie, representing the city of Enid, called it a “special day.”

“Main Street has been doing yeoman’s work making the downtown look better,” he said.

He told the group Enid Lights Up the Plains is the premier downtown event during the Christmas season, and he complimented U.S. Cellular for supporting it.

Jones called Enid Lights Up the Plains a wonderful event for Enid and said he looks forward to supporting it for many years to come.

The event will involve decorations in downtown, carriage rides around the Square, Santa and Mrs. Claus, food vendors and a fireworks finale by Western Enterprises.

“The fireworks evolve every year, and I know they are working on something special this year,” Chambers said.

Chambers said organizers plug lights into every outside outlet they have, but she would like to see more lights downtown. She encouraged downtown stores to decorate their store fronts so Enid can increase the number of lights.

Garfield County Court House plans to increase electrical outlets available. Trees on the courthouse lawn are adopted by Enid schools and decorated by students, who often need additional outlets.
