An Alva’s man murder trial has been scheduled for next summer
Jason Michael Nelson, 33, will go to trial July 12 in Woods County District Court for the death of 18-year-old Nathan Lyon, of Waynoka.
Court records show Nelson was bound over on the capital offense July 13 and was arraigned in district court Monday, when the trial date was set. The delay is due to Nelson’s defense attorney’s trial schedule.
According to an affidavit filed in the case, Lyon and Nelson had arranged to fight Dec. 28, 2007, after Nelson sent a sexually explicit text message to a female friend of Lyon’s.
The men were to meet about a mile north of Waynoka to fight. When Nelson arrived, he threw a plastic jar of concentrated sulfuric acid into Lyon’s face, according to the affidavit.
Nelson initially was charged with felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after former felony conviction. The charge was amended following Lyon’s death Jan. 4.
He faces life, life in prison or death if convicted and has been held without bond since the charges were amended.
