Hume named president, COO of Continental Resources

Enid native Jeff Hume has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of Conti-nental Resources.

He has been chief operating officer since October 2008.

Harold Hamm, chairman and chief executive officer of Continental Resources, said Hume has demonstrated leadership during the past year in guiding the company through a volatile time in the industry.

“Along with operating and cost improvement, he played a key role in maintaining the company’s focus on capital discipline as we weathered the storm this past year,” Hamm said.

Hume has been with Continental more than 26 years. He said he is appreciative and flattered by the promotion and is optimistic about future growth.

The company looks five years in the future, and Hume said it has inventory to allow it to more than double in size, depending on commodity prices and the capital to work with.

“We’re price takers on the market size, and with prices stabilizing and running slightly above $80 a barrel, it will allow us to grow 10 percent the next year and possibly more in years after that,” he said.

One advantage Continental has used is technology. Hume said technology changes every quarter. During the past year, there have been significant changes in stimulation technology, with multi-stage fracturing, and it is being used in the Oklahoma Woodford Shale and the Williston Basin Bakken field in North Dakota and Mon-tana.

“Technology continues to change and change fast,” he said. “We have a wonderful group of young professional technical talent who are sharp and bring new skill sets into the business. It’s fun to watch the technology come about.”

Hamm will continue to exercise an active operating management role as chairman and chief executive officer.

Prior to becoming COO, Hume was senior vice president of operations and previously was senior vice president of resource and business development. He also has served as vice president of drilling operations. He joined Continental in May 1983 as vice president of engineering and operations. He previously held engineering positions with Sun Oil Co., Monsanto Co. and FCD Oil Corp.

Hume is a registered professional engineer and member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association and Oklahoma and National Professional Engineering Societies. He is a 1975 graduate of Oklahoma State University with a BS degree in petroleum engineering technology.
