During a Tuesday morning assembly, McKinley Elementary School students had an unusual visitor.
The McKinley Cardinals were visited by a jumbo version of the school’s mascot.
“Our cardinal came to visit last time we had a McKinley morning assembly, and we decided as a group that our mascot should have a name,” Principal Jan Robinson told students and parents at the assembly.
It was a collaborative effort of all the students in the school and a name was decided upon and bestowed upon the visiting cardinal.
“I appreciate everyone who gave the committee and idea,” Robinson said. “They could only pick one. This is what they picked: Big Red.”
After naming of the mascot, an awards ceremony was held for various school honors. Big Red the McKinley Cardinal shook the hand of each student who won an award.
