Cimarron schools slate $1.16 million bond issue vote April 7

Cimarron Public Schools officials are asking voters to approve a $1.16 million bond issue April 7.

Superintendent Steve Walker said the money would be used mainly for adding a junior high wing onto the school. Cimarron’s junior high enrollment is about 85, and Walker hopes to have junior high students contained in one area during those transitional school years.

The addition to the school would be made of concrete and therefore serve as a storm shelter for the school and the community, Walker said. It also will make more space for classes.

“I’m using a portable building and I’ve got classes in the gym I’d like to move out,” Walker said. “I also want to get the junior high students where they’re in their own building.”

The bond issue would increase property taxes 3 percent.

“If you pay $500 in property taxes, your taxes will go up only $14 a year,” Walker said.

Other projects for the bond money are a concession stand for the softball field, new windows to increase energy efficiency, a new security system, an intercom system, computer upgrades, library renovations, a new phone system, playground equipment and an agriculture farm.

Cimarron School District is a consolidation of Ames and Lahoma schools.

Cimarron successfully passed a bond issue in 2004 for a new roof on the school.
