The nation is striving for energy independence, and Autry Technology Center is amongst those leading the way.
Now open for enrollment is Autry Tech’s new class, “Intro to Wind Energy,” which will begin Jan. 13.
Students in the class will get a general overview of wind energy, a look into the history of the wind industry, trends developing in the industry and jobs in the industry, said Don Roberts, agricultural business management coordinator for Autry Tech.
“Part of the class will be looking at different careers that could be involved in the wind industry,” he said.
The class will touch on the major points of the industry, as well as educate students on how to get involved with wind power.
“There will be some discussions about wind farming,” Roberts said. “At some point there will be some kind of future outlook.”
As large-scale wind farming is relatively knew, technological advances are eminent for the industry as more people get involved.
The class also will discuss government policy and its effects on the industry.
As wind farms continue to be built, more workers for the field are needed. In order for the industry to provide more jobs in the state rather than bring in more out-of-state workers, more Oklahomans need to be trained for the industry, Roberts said.
The class will meet 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Jan. 13 and ending Jan. 22.
An in-district rate of $85, which includes all class materials, will be charged for the class, Roberts said.
In addition to wind power education, the school will install wind energy equipment.
“We’re looking at it not only as an alternative electricity source for the school but also for education,” said Autry Superintendent Jim Strate in a previous interview.
Assistant Superintendent Marcie Mack said the wind energy equipment should be arriving by the end of the week.
For information on the class or to enroll call 242-2750 or visit Autry Tech, 1201 W. Willow.
