Okeene High School will host a new exchange student, 16-year-old Mareicke Voigt, from Sonnenbuehl-Undingen, Germany, for the 2008-09 school year. Andy and Alice Bisel are the host family.

Fire Safety Week will be observed at Okeene Ele-entary School beginning Monday. A presentation will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

Rise and Shine will be 8:20 a.m. Monday with third grade students leading the presentation.

The elementary faculty and school staff will meet Wednes-day for a faculty luncheon.

A 4-H meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria.

Grades three and four will travel to Southwestern Okla-homa State University Friday for a play.

The Band Carnival will be held at the high school gym Saturday. The coronation is at 7:30 p.m.

Box Tops For Education, Campbells and Tyson label collections currently are underway. Box Top Football Contest will end Oct 15. The class with the most points will be treated to a pizza party.
Community
The Serve for Success AmeriCorps is off to a good start this new school year. The program has 31 members placed in 14 school districts across northwest Oklahoma. AmeriCorps members tutor students during the school day and provide after-school homework help. AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance while serving, as well as a scholarship after they complete their term of service. Jarred Kubat, former graduate of Okeene High School, and a 2005 graduate of Oklahoma State University, recently has taken the oath for attorney at law and has been admitted to Oklahoma Bar Association.
Kubat currently is employ-ed with EnCana Oil and Gas (USA) Inc., Denver. He is the son of Patty Kubat and Kevin Kubat.

Local Okeene Boy Scouts recently worked on their fishing merit badges. Tim and Allen Iven helped the boys with their requirements. Those participating with their 1st Class program requirements include: Zephan Hawkins, Mitchell Howe, Brexton Smith, Austin Jordan, Matthew Lamar and Zeke Cannon. Adult sponsors attending the event were Lisa and Ron Howe and Guy Smith.
