Two area educators recently attended a conference at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
Shannon Goodwin, a counselor at Waukomis Elementary School and Gretchen Cole-Lade, a special education teacher at Enid High School, attended the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s 12th annual Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators in late June.
At the conference educators collaborate with museum educators and Holocaust scholars to help enhance educators’ ability to teach about the Holo-caust.
“The legacy of the Holo-caust remains very much a part of our world,” said Pete Fredlake, coordinator for the Belfer National Conference. “Teaching the students the causes of and the responses to the Holocaust will build a foundation for understanding this history and its continuing relevance to us in the 21st century, which is why it is important to build the foundation by training teachers.”
Participants in the conference used their experiences to share rationales, strategies and approaches for teaching the Holocaust.
