Frey competes in Miss

Oklahoma pageant



Ashlynn Frey of Lahoma recently made her first appearance in the Miss Oklahoma pageant earlier this month as Miss North-western Oklahoma State University 2008.

Frey, who is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education, earned a $950 cash award plus other prizes for the “salute ad campaign” for the Miss Oklahoma program.

The Miss Oklahoma organization asks each contestant to sell at least one advertising page for the program, but many sell more to receive additional prizes.

Frey sold 19 pages, second place among the 42 contestants. In addition to the $950, she received two gold patron packages, each worth $400 — one for her parents and one for the local pageant director, Misti Knopf. She also won three nights at the Tulsa Hilton Hotel for her parents during pageant week.

3 awarded scholarships

to attend Northwestern

 

Three recent high school graduates have accepted scholarships to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Dustin Green, a graduate of Pioneer-Pleasant Vale High School, has been awarded a Freshman Incentive Scholarship funded through Alva’s Economic Development Sales Tax Initiative Grant.

In high school, Green was a member of the football team.

He is the son of Tammy and Ben Green.

Jason Kitchel, who graduated from Enid High School, also will receive a Freshman Incentive Scholarship as well as a band participation scholarship.

At EHS, Kitchel was a member of the band and Circle of Friends.

He is the son of Miranda Moore and Allen Kitchel.

Alysha Martin, also an Enid High graduate, has been awarded the Freshman Incentive Scholarship and an enrollment scholarship for attending Northwestern’s Ranger Preview day.

Her activities include Circle of Friends and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She also was a Special Olympics volunteer.

She is the daughter of Charles and Diane Martin.

Featuring one of the most comprehensive financial assistance programs in the region, Northwestern provides more than $1 million annually in scholarships and other forms of institutional assistance to students.



Juniors attend science,

math academy at SWOSU



Twenty high school juniors and seniors attended the Science and Mathematics Academy June 2-13 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The academy, funded by SWOSU and a grant from Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, was for high ability juniors and seniors. The purpose of the academy is to expose students to the close relationship between science, mathematics, technology and society. And, the program is designed to motivate the participants to pursue higher education and careers in science, mathematics and technology.

During the first part of the academy, the students studied academic science units offered in biology, chemistry, geology and space science, health, physics, mathematics and computer science.

The students also participated in an interdisciplinary problem-solving unit directed by SWOSU scientists.

Additional enrichment activities were scheduled throughout the academy.

Participants in this year’s academy included area students Louis Blowers of Garber, and Wil Markus of Kingfisher.



Maxwell wins scholarship

to OBU College of Fine Arts



Griffin Maxwell, Enid, received a scholarship from Oklahoma Baptist University’s Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts.

Maxwell received the William Rowlett King Memorial Scholarship.

Located in Shawnee, OBU offers 10 bachelor’s degrees with 82 fields of study. The Christian liberal arts university has an overall enrollment of 1,607, with students from 39 states and 21 other countries.
