Hughes presents his research at state Capitol
Adam Hughes of Drummond was selected to represent Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford at Research Day held recently at the state Capitol.
This annual event sponsored by Oklahoma EPSCoR, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the National Science Foundation showcases the outstanding undergraduate research taking place in Oklahoma’s colleges and universities. Hughes was one of 22 undergraduate students from 15 higher education institutions participating in this event.
During Research Day, students presented competitive research posters to the state Legislature and the public. Hughes’ research focused on animal health.
Area students honored at SWOSU banquet
Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Biology Club and Beta Beta Beta recently held their annual honors banquet on the Weatherford campus.
Scholarships and awards were presented to outstanding biology students at the end-of-year ceremony. Among those receiving awards were Chris Tuma, Waukomis, Ottis and Buena Ballard Memorial Scholarship, and Bethany Hess, Waukomis, Otis King Memorial Scholarship.
High school seniors receive scholarships
Graduating high school seniors in the area have received scholarships from Southwest Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
Curtis Simmons of Cimarron High School, Mikel Blake Gillpatrick of Chisholm High School, Bryce Smith of Enid High School, Allyson Doane of Oklahoma Bible Academy, Kristen Koepping of OBA, Seth Fisher of EHS and Garrick Friesen of EHS have been awarded a $500 Residence Hall Scholarship. The scholarship is renewable if certain conditions are met. The current value is approximately $2,000.
Doane and Koepping have also been awarded the University Scholar Award, which provides up to 16 hours of tuition and fees for the first two semesters. If certain conditions are met, the scholarship is renewable for an added six semester, making the total value of the award approximately $15,000.
Erika Christner of Drummond High School has been awarded a Distinguished Freshman Scholarship and Valedictorian Residence Hall Scholarship. The Distinguished Freshman Scholarship provides $3,584 for up to 16 hours of tuition during the first two semesters.
Fisher and Friesen have also received the Distinguished Freshman Scholarship.
Psychology department honors students
Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s psychology program recently honored several of its outstanding students on the Weatherford campus. Receiving undergraduate honors and awards for the 2007-08 year were Miles Johnson, Weatherford, Jerry and Sylvia Levy Memorial Scholarship Award; Kelanie Jones, Weatherford, Jerry and Sylvia Levy Memorial Scholarship Award; and Kari Watkins, Enid, Psychology Scholarship Award; Kevin Shavor, Weatherford, Harold H. Budde Award for Exceptional Service to Psychology; Sandra Burpo, Burns Flat/Dill City, Dean’s Scholarship; Whitney Kistler, Carter, Psychology Scholarship Award; and Zach Patterson, Lindsay, Jim Blagowsky Memorial Scholarship Award.
National society selects area high school seniors
Chaylana Burpo, a sophomore at Oklahoma Bible Academy, and Monica Johnson of Cimarron High School in Lahoma, have been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement, made April 11, was made by NSHSS founder and chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.
Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, members-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.

UPDATED photo- Silver Alert issued for missing Garfield County man
Garfield County authorities have issued a Silver Alert for an 88-year-old man who hasn’t been seen since leaving for church. The county sheriff’s office says Edward Sutter was last seen about 9:30 a.m. Sunday when he left home for 1st United Methodist Church in Enid. Sutter never arrived at the church. He was last seen driving a gray, 2003 Toyota Avalon. Authorities had initially said he was driving a Toyota Altima.
