County runs out of flu vaccine for 2nd time, plans third event

For the second time this fall, Garfield County Health Department ran short on the number of flu vaccines given at a free clinic at Oakwood Mall.

Registered nurse Linda Farr began turning people away shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday after the supply of adult vaccines was exhausted.

A limited number of vaccines was available after that time for children up to 18.

Health officials offered a limited number of FluMist nasal spray vaccine doses to people up to 49 years of age and in good health.

Farr said she usually orders approximately 3,000 vaccines for the free flu shot clinic offered every fall. But this year, more than 5,000 people have sought flu shots.

After a record high 3,000 flu shots were given Oct. 25 at the first free clinic, health officials were forced to cancel the second day until another shipment of vaccine arrived.

That shipment was approximately 2,000 doses, which was dispensed in 41⁄2 hours Thursday.

Many people lined up early for the shots, although lines moved quickly, with no one having to wait more than 30 minutes, Farr said.

Farr said health officials would announce soon when another flu clinic can be set to meet a public demand that is greater this year with news about the bird flu epidemic in parts of the world.

Bird flu, which has been reported heavily by the media, has been restricted mostly to Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. No cases have been reported in the United States.
