Bond is doubled for man charged in 1st-degree rape

ENID, Okla. — An Enid man charged with first-degree rape in August, had his bond doubled Thursday after failing to appear in court last month for a bond appearance.

Chad Wesley Harlan, 29, appeared Thursday via video from the Garfield County Detention Facility before Special District Judge Brian Lovell.

Harlan failed to appear in court Nov. 5. He was free on $50,000 when he did not show up for his court date. Lovell doubled the bond amount on the charge.

Lovell also doubled $10,000 and $5,000 bonds on other cases Harlan had pending, bringing his total bond amount to $130,000.

The felony rape charge stemmed from a July 20 report from a 16-year-old girl who said she was raped by a man who identified himself as “Damian,” and offered to give her a ride home from Walmart.

She said the man drove her to a nearby parking lot and forced himself onto her. The girl told police she was too scared to say anything and attempted to push the man away, but he kept advancing toward her, eventually raping her.

Police released surveillance video and images of the suspected rapist, and Harlan was identified as the man in the video and images released.

Harlan also has pending charges for unlawful purchase of pseudoephedrine and drug possession.

He was ordered to return to court Feb. 11 for a bond appearance on all three cases.
