Potable water flowing into Enid limited by outages

ENID, Okla. — Power outages affecting much of northwest Oklahoma are limiting the amount of potable water flowing into Enid from the city’s well fields in Major County.

According to Oklahoma Water Resources Board figures, about 87 percent of Enid’s water comes from the Cimarron River Aquifer, drawn from more than 100 wells around Ames and Cleo Springs.

Steve Kime, director of marketing and public relations for the city of Enid, said the city still is receiving water from its western well fields, but the flow currently is less than normal.

Kime said an unknown number of wells currently are without power due to power outages that came with last night’s winter storm.

He said OG&E still is evaluating how many wells are affected, and how long it will take to bring them back online.

Kime said the city has enough water in storage to last more than 24 hours of normal consumption, plus the reduced amount still coming in from western wells, so the city could have as much as 48 hours’ capacity available.

Kime said updates will be made available as the city and OG&E continue their assessment of the power outage and efforts to restore power.
