NOC Enid slates Moms2College Resource Fair

ENID, Okla. — It’s not easy to go to college when you’re a single parent, but with the right community support, it’s possible.

Northern Oklahoma College is holding the Moms2College Resource Fair 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Montgomery Hall on the Enid campus.

Bill Johnson, NOC spokesman, said the event is an idea from Oklahoma State Regents of Higher Education, created to allow mothers to find out they can attend college.

“It’s part of the overall plan to get more people in Oklahoma to obtain a college degree,” Johnson said. “It is designed to identify and advocate for those single parents who want a degree, and this event will serve as a pathway for them to complete their education.”

In 2008, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education received a SMART grant from the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma to encourage single mothers to pursue and complete a college education, and to provide them with information on overcoming real and perceived barriers.

The free information forum is designed to help single parents attend college to get a degree. Information about enrollment, financial aid, scholarships, relevant support and more will be available at the resource fair.

Sponsors are NOC, Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma and Single Mothers Academic Resource Team. Refreshments will be provided.

Representatives from NOC and additional resources including Oklahoma Workforce, Oklahoma Department of Human Services, YMCA and more will be available at the fair.

Attendees can learn about the costs to attend college and how far financial aid can go. They can see what college program would work best with their academic goals and family needs.

“Collaborative efforts like this are needed to address the growing number of single-parent students in Oklahoma,” said Glen Johnson, chancellor of Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. “The Moms2College fair provides assistance to an underrepresented group of students, to ensure that they have access to an affordable college education and the services needed to obtain that education.”

NOC summer and fall enrollment begins March 25.
