YWCA sale was successful

More than 270 children were able to pick out Christmas gifts for their family and friends at piggy bank prices thanks to the YWCA’s annual Children’s Christmas Sale.

Dena Patterson, YWCA children’s services director, said the sale could not have happened without the help of several volunteers.

“We couldn’t have done it without the volunteers’ help,” she said. “Autry Tech were there to help with the Santa Claus pictures. They also created the posters for the poster contest. Chisholm brought around 40 students to help. They were excited about helping the kids shop.”

Patterson also said the YWCA staff was a great help.

“We also had our staff. They all have their own jobs, but they all jumped in and helped,” she said. “We had tremendous help from them.”

This was the first year the Children’s Christmas Sale was held at Oakwood Mall. YWCA moved locations because officials said they did not have enough room.

“I want to give credit to the mall for their donation. It was incredible having it out there,” Patterson said. “Due to the number of volunteers and the big space, it was the smoothest year ever. The parents commented they didn’t have to wait as long as before. The kids had a blast. They had a good time picking out gifts. It is a huge event that can’t be done without everyone’s help.”

Any extra items left over after the sale are donated to other agencies.

“Once we shop, we let other area agencies come through and shop,” Patterson said. “Then, it went to University Place Church. We pass the extra to be used for another Christmas event in our community.”
