ENID —
“Grandmothers Quilts” will be shown at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church at 3 p.m. Sunday in celebration of Grandparents Day and as a prelude to the upcoming Cherokee Strip events.
Anyone with a grandmother quilt or a historical quilt is invited to participate in this event. Quilts should be brought to the church by 2:45 p.m.
Each quilt will be placed open on the pews and everyone will have an opportunity to tell about the history of the quilt and the quilter. Viewing will begin at 3 p.m., with a tea served at 4 p.m. An open labyrinth walk 5-8 p.m. will follow in the Parish Hall. Participants are invited to stay and walk the labyrinth in celebration and memory of grandparents. Quilts will be taken home at the end of the event.
“Quilts remind us of our personal grandparents. They are original works of art created from necessity,” said Margaret Moss, curator of the quilt showing. “They are in some cases examples of fine needle work commemorating a new baby, graduations, weddings, and events in history.”
One quilt on display will be a World War II victory quilt. This single-bed quilt was made by Artha Lee Van Horn Massey, grandmother to four generations. The quilt was made as her personal war effort. Victory quilts were thought to have been crafted to be a casket cover in the event one did not survive the war, and also to recognize the commitment a family member made to hearth, home and country. The victory quilt on display never has been used as a bed cover, but always has been exhibited as an object of respect, honoring the grandmother who made it.
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church is located at 518 W. Randolph. Parking is off Maple. For information, contact the church office at com munications@St.Matthews Enid.org or 237-4737.
