Shon Jackson is candidate for county sheriff

ENID — Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Shon Jackson has announced his candidacy for sheriff.

“My goal is to provide professionalism and committed service to the citizens of Garfield County,” Jackson said. “I insist on protecting our citizens from predators through public awareness enforcement and exhaustive investigations.”

The filing dates for the county office are April 11-13. The election is June 26. Current Sheriff Bill Winchester announced he will not seek re-election. Oklahoma sheriffs serve four-year terms.

Jackson, who grew up in Enid, is a third-generation law enforcement officer with Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. His father and grandfather both served with the department.

Jackson began his law enforcement career in 1995 with the Mosby Police Department in Missouri. A year later, he joined Canton Police Department, where he worked three years before leaving as assistant chief. Jackson was Waukomis Police Department chief and joined Garfield County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. He worked at the county jail before becoming the department’s DARE and school resources officer.

“During this time I took great pride in developing and maintaining strong collaborative partnerships with all of our county schools, where great focus was placed in keeping our schools a safe environment,” he said.

Jackson also spent several years in the patrol and criminal investigations division within the department before being promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2006.

“During this time, I have managed more than $400,000 in grants to this agency, developed physical standards for hiring process ad special units, and developed and implemented policies and procedures,” he said. “In addition to overseeing departmental operations, I serve in the training of our deputies and area law enforcement officers.”

Jackson specializes in instructing courses of leadership and management, firearm training and officer use-of-force tactics. He also trains the department’s tactical team, serves as team commander and is one of two of the department’s certified snipers.

“I take great pride in our department, its training and growth, and of course the men and women that serve within it,” he said.

Jackson is a graduate of Northern Oklahoma College with an associates degree in criminal justice, and a graduate of Mid America Christian University with bachelor of science in criminal justice management and ethics and a minor in Bible theology.

He also is a graduate of FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Command Institute, Supervisor and Leadership Institute and Executive Survival Institute. Jackson has an Advanced law enforcement certification with more than 1,700 hours of law enforcement training, and more than 17 years law enforcement experience, with advanced certifications in ground defense control tactics, Taser and other use-of-force tactics.

Jackson also is a federal- and state-certified firearms instructor, active shooter-threat instructor and is department’s Reserve Academy coordinator.

He is a member of Oklahoma Sheriffs Association, Oklahoma DARE Officers Association and FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. He is a member of North Enid Lions Club, Chisholm’s Dad’s Club and is active in coaching little league baseball.

Jackson and his wife, Jennifer, have two children and attend First Baptist Church of Enid.

“My future is in Garfield County,” he said, “because this is where I was raised and where we are raising our children.”
